GtoPdb Ligand ID: 13140

Comment: Harmaline is a plant-derived β-carboline alkaloid that is a component of the psychoactive drink Ayahuasca, that is traditionally brewed by indigenous cultures in the Amazon. It is one of the harmala alkaloids produced by plants such as Banisteriopsis caapi and Peganum harmala. Pharmacologically harmaline acts to prevent the breakdown of Ayahuasca's principal hallucinogenic substance dimethyltryptamine (DMT) by reversibly inhibiting monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A).
