Functional Assays Click here for help
Molecular cloning, two microelectrode voltage clamp and yeast two-hybrid. The same response was also seen in rats.
Species:  Mouse
Tissue:  Brain-derived cDNAs expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes
Response measured:  Protein-protein interactions between Kv2.1 and electrically silent Kv6.1 α-subunits detected.
Novel current with decreased rates of deactivation, and a hyperpolarizing shift of half maximal activation potential when compared to Kv2.1.

Physiological Functions Click here for help
Kv6.1 subunits, when expressed alone, are unable to elicit any current. However, Kv6.1 can suppress Kv2.1 current (albeit less effectively than Kv5.1) and to a lesser extent, it can suppress Kv2.2.
The Kv2.1 currents are strongly modified by Kv6.1, which increases the time constant of activation and slows down inactivation.
Species:  Human
Tissue:  Heterologous Xenopus laevis oocytes

Biologically Significant Variant Comments
A total of 457 SNPs have been identified in human KCNG1. Please see the entry on GeneCards for more information.

This variant has questionable validity because it originates from a cancer cell line
  • RNA sequence: NM_172318.2
  • Protein sequence: NP_758529.1
  • Amino acids: 275
  • Type: Splice variant
  • Species: Human
  • [63,67,240]
.
General Comments
Kv6.1 has no function on its own, but has modulatory actions on Kv2 channels.
