The expression of virulence factors by pathogenic bacteria is controlled by quorum sensing (QS), a process of cell to cell communication that bacteria use to share information about cell density [3]. ω-Hydroxyemodin inhibits Staphylococcus aureus QS-dependent virulence, mediated by the accessory gene regulator (agr), while indirectly bolstering the host immune response [1].
