Summary of Clinical Use Click here for help
Nitrofurantoin is indicated for the treatment of and prophylaxis against acute or recurrent, uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections or pyelitis, in particular against infections due to susceptible strains of E. coli, Enterococci, Staphylococci, Citrobacter, Klebsiella and Enterobacter. Most strains of Proteus and Serratia are resistant and all Pseudomonas strains are resistant. Nitrofurantoin and the quinolone antibacterials are mutually antagonistic in vitro. Combination with quinolone antibacterials should be avoided. Nitrofurantoin is available as a generic medication.
