Comment: Dapsone is a sulfonamide-related antibacterial, antimalarial and anti-inflammatory drug. In bacteria it inhibits dihydropteroate synthase-mediated production of folic acid, which has the effect of disrupting the availability of thymidylate for DNA synthesis.

Dapsone is used to treat leprosy (as part of a multi-drug regimen), dermatitis herpetiformis and prophylaxis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in immunodeficient subjects (in particular AIDS patients). More details of the use of dapsone as an antimalarial agent is provided under the Malaria tab.
