Used to treat complicated hypertension, isolated systolic hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. Also used as a treatment for diabetic nephropathy.

Losartan is a competitive inhibitor of the AT1 receptor, leading to reduced binding of angiotensin II. This leads to an inhibition of the effects mediated by angiotensin II, namely vasocontriction and aldosterone secretion therefore the activity of losartan leads to a decreased in blood pressure and vascular resistance.
